At the Lodge

We did arrive on time in Hoedspruit, and all of our luggage also arrived! This has been the smoothest traveling experience ever! Which is fortunate, as this is a large group.

The traditional aarrival at the airport photo. This was a bit of a challenge, as the students were far more interested in watching the vervet monkeys than in posing for me. Nervous parents, take note: Your student is here and smiling!

With 12 of us plus Carli (our guide and driver), we have a huge van. For the airport pickup, we also rented a trailer to accommodate some of the luggage. A 45 minute drive took us to our lodge.

After a little down time to get organized in our rooms and appreciate not being in motion, we walked a short way to the dry riverbed of the Selati River. Landen and Lilli climbed the railway bridge for a view, and Jessica, who runs our program, joined them.

We relaxed around a fire in the riverbed, and explored a bit. Due to the surrounding hills, the sun sets quickly, so darkness sent us back to the lodge.

At the lodge, we had a braai (barbecue) at the outdoor firepit. Jessica and Carli cooked amazing steaks and braaibroodjies (pronounced brah-ee brickies)--toasted sandwiches with cheese, tomato, onion and chutney, with plenty of butter and garlic. Kailey made us her specialty: roasted Starburst candies.

Our first night supper was a complete success! We had the steaks and braaibroodjies, along with potato salad, green salad with tomatoes and avocados, roasted carrots, pumpkin fritters and a lemon mousse dessert. Everyone ate well, we  reviewed safety protocols and procedures, and we adjourned to showers and (horizontal) beds for the first time in 3 days. I think everybody will sleep well tonight!

Tomorrow we plan to visit a wildlife rehabilitation facility, an ancient (4000 year old) baobab tree, and take an afternoon game drive in another reserve. No veterinary work as it is Sunday. Our work week begins monday!
