Departure!

 Our largest group so far left today! 11 students and one instructor embarked on our adventure, setting off on the long, long journey to South Africa. Some of us are veteran travelers, others have never been far from home. All are excited for our adventure to begin!

Since we will be spenfing our London layover exploring the city, I will update the blog while awaiting our flight to Johannesburg. It sounds like we will be going to the Natural HIstory Museum, and I don't know exactly what else the students have decided upon. For sure riding a red double-decker bus!

Day 14: Elephants and Departure

 We are all sad to leave our South African home, but also looking forward to being back home. This morning was a 4:30 am departure so that we could visit the elephants at HERD  before heading to the airport. HERD is an elephant orphanage where elephants are raised, rehabilitated, and roam free under the watchful care of their minders. They have the choice to come up to headquarters each morning for human interaction and hand feeding. And they eat early! Even the drive to Jabulani is gorgeous as the sun comes up. The colors and shadows in the sunrise are so recognizably African; I never feel as if I have seen enough. And this time, on our way, we encountered a lion stalking prey (probably impala) in the dawn light. We watched until she disappeared behind some brush, captivated by her size, stealth and grace. At the Lodge

 We did arrive on time in Hoedspruit, and all of our luggage also arrived! This has been the smoothest traveling experience ever! Which is fortunate, as this is a large group.  The traditional aarrival at the airport photo. This was a bit of a challenge, as the students were far more interested in watching the vervet monkeys than in posing for me. Nervous parents, take note: Your student is here and smiling! With 12 of us plus Carli (our guide and driver), we have a huge van. For the airport pickup, we also rented a trailer to accommodate some of the luggage. A 45 minute drive took us to our lodge. After a little down time to get organized in our rooms and appreciate not being in motion, we walked a short way to the dry riverbed of the Selati River.
